To start using biodiesel all that you really need is a diesel.
From there you can locate fueling stations that have biodiesel and blends for sale in your area. Here in Salt Lake City there is only one location to get commercial biodiesel, Dal Soglio Oil.
Another option is to find a cooperative or home brewer in your area and trade for biodiesel. The local organization here in the Wasatch Front is the Utah Biodiesel Cooperative. The UBC is not a traditional coop, and is new, but has started the process of advocating and promoting biodiesel in the area. Other groups are home brewing. Jack Jones locally has a great coop of sorts at Riverstones Biodiesel. There are many others that don’t have web a web presence that are actively brewing.
If you want to brew your own biodiesel you can spend as little as $200 to get a processor going if you are good at scrounging. “girlMark”, the prophetess, of localB100.com has a great book and a collaborative tutorial that lays all the basics out on how to build a processor with parts from Harbor Freight, Home Depot, and your local plastic jug distributor (we got our last one at Albertsons). Visit her site and buy her manual it’s well worth the money!
